PROGRAMMING WITH SCRATCH

Children will learn common software coding concepts through a MIT-developed coding app called Scratch to create their own animations and video games.

 

Duration: 6 Hours (4 sessions)

Pre-requisite:  N/A

WHAT IS SCRATCH?

Scratch is developed by the MIT Lab and used by students, teachers and young programmers worldwide to create animations and games.  It consists of visual programming interface focusing on introducing computing to young programmers.  You can refer to scratch.mit.edu for its programming interface.

WHAT CAN SCRATCH DO?

It consists of media rich commands that allows programmers to create animations and games using drag-and-drop programming interface.

WHO SHOULD LEARN SCRATCH?

Any children of age 7 or up can start learning computing using Scratch.  Indeed, the software has been used by millions of children around the world.

WHAT IS THE COURSE OUTLINE?

Class 1:  Introduction of Programming Scratch - and explore!

Class 2:  Animated Stories with your imagination

        -  What constitutes animations and how to animate in Scratch

        -  How to have multiple characters to interact with each other

        -  How to do background changes 

        -  Create own animated stories with different topics

Class 3 - 4:  Scratch Game Design

        -  Use variables to track of scores and lives

        -  If-then-else conditions 

        -  Synchronisation among characters

        -  Design enhanced maze game and shooting games

Students need to bring their own wifi-enabled laptops (Windows or Mac).
